Botox vs Fillers: Myths vs. Facts

Injectable fillers and Botox/Dysport are two of the most popular non-surgical treatments when it comes to treating facial lines and wrinkles; however they are still somewhat misunderstood. When considering Botox/Dysport or Cosmetic Injectables, it’s important to understand the differences and consult with your medical professional in order to make an educated decision. We’ve decided it’s time to set a few things straight when it comes to fillers and Botox/Dysport, so we’re eliminating some common myths regarding these popular injectables!

  1. Botox and Dermal Fillers do the same thing.

Myth! While Botox/Dysport and dermal fillers are both non-surgical wrinkle treatments that can be used to improve appearance of lines and wrinkles; they work in completely different ways. As a muscle relaxant, Botox/Dysport temporarily relaxes the muscles that lead to the formation of lines; wrinkles that are the result of smiling, frowning and other movements. With the muscles relaxed, the skin above them lies smoothly. Typically, Botox/Dysport is injected in the upper part of the face such as eyes, crow’s feet and glabella.

Dermal fillers in contrast to Botox/Dysport, add volume beneath the skin’s surface in the lower face. Fillers are injected in areas such as cheeks, around the mouth or in the lips. Plumping up the skin can soften any visible lines and improve facial contour.

  1. Once you have Botox or Dermal Fillers, you have to continue getting them forever.

Myth! Patients can stop getting injections of Botox/Dysport or cosmetic fillers at any time. Doing so does not make wrinkles and lines worse; it simply allows the normal development of wrinkles to resume. Depending on the injectable used and the area treated, results can last anywhere from 4 months to 3-4 years. Patients who want to maintain their results must continue the treatments. The proper maintenance interval depends on the individual, the location treated and the product used. 1. Botox and Dermal Fillers are for women and men.

Fact! Although cosmetic injectables are more common among women, there has been a significant increase amongst men in recent years. Men and women may see better results from different types and amount of injectables, luckily there are a variety of injectables and muscle relaxants that address a wide array of concerns. We’ll go into a little bit more detail on Botox/Dysport, Juvederm, Restylane, Radiesse and Kybella in our next blogs! You can also head to our last blog to read up on Sculptra. Prior to your injectable treatment, Dr. Laronn will address your specific concerns and discuss which treatments are best for you.

  1. Cosmetic Injectables will make you look “frozen” or fake.

Myth (this is one of the biggest misconceptions)! Injectables create a natural, refreshed look, so it is not obvious that a person has undergone any kind of treatment. When administered by a skilled professional, injectables deliver subtle, yet beautiful improvements. Injectables are like tools; the person using the tools, the type of tool used, and where they are used are all important factors of the outcome. Our goals are for patients to have a natural looking result. So while others may notice a refreshed appearance; it is unlikely that they will know that anything was done unless the patient chooses to tell them.

  1. Botox and Dermal Filler treatments don’t have to be painful.

Fact! At Advanced Aesthetics M.D. Med Spa, patient comfort is a top priority and we take a number of measures to ensure this. We offer multiple anesthetic techniques depending on the procedure and the patient. Make sure you receive treatment at a clinic with a Doctor who has the correct license to administer anesthesia. While pain tolerance varies from patient to patient, most patients report only minor discomfort if any at all. Generally, a numbing cream is used to numb the treatment area, and many dermal fillers are mixed with lidocaine to reduce pain. Technique and tools used, such as a cannula, can reduce pain and downtime. Pain can also be dependent on the injector, it’s important to find a provider with the appropriate training and experience.
